WETTBERERB ARTESELLA IN VAL DI SELLA (SÜDTIROL)

MALGA COSTA – A NEW ALMOST INVISIBLE BUILDING - AS A LANDSCAPE

Malga Costa is a rural place and the entrance to the artistic culmination of ArteSella.
At the same time the approach to Malga Costa as well as the place itself is a landscape experience. The new building is a respectful and quiet intervention in the landscape and atmosphere of Val di Sella. It grows out of the existing small hill west of Malga Costa. The hill accommodates almost the entire building, only the artists ateliers on the west end and the auditorium with the main entrance on the east side is visible to the visitors. Most of the new programmatic functions are hidden inside the hill. Approaching Malga Costa by foot, you experience the place still focusing mainly on the atmospheric experience of mountains, grassland and forests.
Only from the background of the Malga Costa a transparent facade steps forward to welcome the visitors of ArteSella and direct them to the LandArt path. In the foreground part of the new building visitors will be welcomed in a light-flooded room having the possibility to visit the shop and buy tickets for the LandArt path.
The auditorium is planned as a multifunctional open space with the possibility to be open in summer and closed in winter. With its spatial flexibility it is open for all kinds of initiatives like workshops, concerts, temporary exhibitions and more. The restaurant area gives the possibility to interact with the existing restaurant in the Malga Costa building, using the common open space in the new courtyard for the comfort of ArteSella's visitors.
Facing away from the stream of visitors with overwhelming panoramic view the surrounding mountains and the sky, the Artist ́s Houses stick out of the hill. Through their arrangement they offer a maximum of privacy and contemplation to the artists. Living and working close to the LandArt path gives the artists the possibility to experience this special place at any moment and with any duration of time. The passage between the public area and the private of the artists is formed by a patio with a cross-coat-like situation. This patio can also be used for special temporary exhibitions. In the meantime, it is a place for the artists retreat.

Villa Strobele – Museum of disappeared works
Villa Strobele – the entrance to Arte Sella – is the symbol of permanence and stability in the surrounding of ArteSella. Though the path of ArteNatura does not exist any longer in the same way as before – Villa Strobele still exists.

ArteNatura has been replaced through a scenario of broken trunks and roots and the Villa Strobele will be the place of memory of disappeared artworks.
